Portland Protest Journalists Win Protections From Federal Agents

Journalists and authorized legal observers documenting the Portland protests are entitled to a preliminary injunction protecting them from intimidation, physical force, or arrest by federal law enforcement, a federal court in Oregon said.

Index Newspapers LLC and other plaintiffs filed a proposed class action against the city, members of the police force, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Marshals Service. They allege that special tactical units deployed to Portland by DHS and the Marshals Service in the name of protecting the federal courthouse have intentionally targeted journalists and legal observers documenting the Black Lives Matter protests.
