PACER “can never be free,” a federal judge told a House subcommittee regarding the oft-maligned electronic filing system for the federal courts.
Cost Shifting: Pending legislation that seeks to make access to electronic filings free to the public would require the judiciary to shift the cost from actual PACER users to litigants, said District Court Judge Audrey Fleissig of the Eastern District of Missouri.
Painful Fee Hike: And that increase to filing fees could be dramatic—from the current rate of $350 to possibly $1,100, Flessig said. Kimberly Robinson reports.
