Oil Majors Face New Suit from Puerto Rico Department of Justice

Puerto Rico launched a lawsuit against nine energy companies on Monday seeking at least $1 billion in damages, joining other US municipalities in the ongoing legal battle over alleged climate misinformation campaigns.

The complaint was filed at the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico Court of First Instance against Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp., BP PLC, and other energy giants.

The defendants devised misinformation campaigns to discredit science around the burning of fossil fuels and its contributions to climate change, according to a translation of Puerto Rico’s complaint, which is written in Spanish.
