Oil Giants Bring Two Additional Supreme Court Climate Bids

Energy companies urged Supreme Court justices to examine climate liability suits from Rhode Island and Hawaii, adding to a growing caseload of similar petitions currently pending before the court.

Attorneys for companies including BP PLC, Chevron Corp., ConocoPhillips, and Exxon Mobile Corp. asked high court justices to examine questions regarding federal court jurisdiction over climate issues in dual petitions filed Friday in cases brought by Rhode Island and Hawaiian municipalities, including the counties of Maui and Honolulu.
