Ohio Lawyer Sanctioned for Soliciting Work from Accused Killer

An Ohio attorney who visited a woman jailed on murder charges and sought to represent her was publicly sanctioned by the state’s highest court for violating an ethics rule prohibiting attorney solicitation.

The rule is violated “when an attorney attempts to represent a person for a fee, that person is not an attorney and is unknown to the attorney, and the representation arises from in-person and unsolicited legal advice,” the Ohio Supreme Court said Wednesday.

The case presented an issue of first impression for the court, which said it had never considered a sanction for one violation of the rule. ...
