NRA Loses First Amendment Suit Against N.Y. Insurance Regulator

A New York insurance regulator’s campaign to stop gun violence by encouraging insurance companies Chubb Ltd., Lockton Co., and Lloyd’s of London to stop administering and underwriting a policy for NRA members didn’t violate the gun group’s rights, the Second Circuit said.

The National Rifle Association policy, Carry Guard, provided insurance coverage for losses caused by licensed firearm use, even where the insured intentionally killed someone or engaged in other wrongdoing.

As a result of an investigation, Superintendent of the New York State Department of Financial Services Maria Vullo determined that Carry Guard violated state insurance law.
