North Carolina Lawmakers Approve Sports Betting Legalization

North Carolina lawmakers approved a sports betting legalization bill Wednesday, sending it to Gov. Roy Cooper (D), who has said “it’s time for us to step up and do it.”

The bill (HB 347), effective in January 2024, allows the state to issue up to 12 mobile licenses to operators that offer wagers on sports events such as professional, college, and electronic sports. It also levies an 18% tax on the operator’s gross wagering revenue, which is total revenue minus the amounts paid as winnings before deductions for expenses, fees, and taxes. ...
