NLRB Leaves Precedent Limiting Guard Union Elections in Place

A divided National Labor Relations Board declined to reconsider its precedent restricting what types of unions a group of guards can join through an election.

The NLRB’s Republican majority without explanation Wednesday decided against reassessing University of Chicago, a 1984 decision blocking mixed guard-nonguard unions from intervening to appear on the ballot for a group of guards seeking to unionize.

The decision deals with an aspect of the NLRB’s doctrine for workers who are deemed guards under the National Labor Relations Act, which triggers certain limitations.
