New York State will add 14 new Supreme Court justices, under legislation signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D).
The measure (S.7220/A.8027) announced on Wednesday increases the number of justices in 11 of the 13 judicial districts in the state to align with the districts’ population.
Justices will take the bench starting in January 2022.
New York’s constitution authorizes one Supreme Court judgeship for each increment of 50,000 residents in a judicial district. The measure adds judgeships for those districts that had less than the full allotment, according to the bill language.
