New York lawyers who primarily practice elsewhere can join a firm with nonlawyer ownership, the state bar said, relaxing the state’s law firm ownership rule.
The New York State Bar Association’s Dec. 7 opinion follows a 2020 New York City Bar opinion allowing lawyers to enter into an ongoing business relationship with a law firm with nonlawyer owners, subject to certain conditions.
The bar “won’t get in the way” of these attorneys, said Zack DeMeola of the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System, which advocates for changes to the legal system.
