Nevada criminal-defense lawyer Bret Whipple was sanctioned by the state’s highest court for failing to properly supervise an employee who embezzled $110,000 in client funds and other ethics violations.
Whipple avoided suspension of his law license by agreeing to practice under an 18-month probationary period. In addition to the supervisory shortfall, which he admitted to, the Nevada Supreme Court said Sept. 17 that Whipple also commingled client funds with personal funds, didn’t respond to the bar’s request for information in time, and allowed a nonlawyer employee to negotiate a client’s settlement.
