Netflix Can Get Documents From Litigation Funder, Judge Says

A federal judge in Virginia will let Netflix Inc. get documents from the litigation funder that backed a Finnish businessman’s unsuccessful patent infringement suit against the streamer.

Judge Leonie Brinkema ended a Friday hearing in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia by reversing a magistrate judge’s earlier decision quashing Netflix’s subpoena seeking records from AiPi LLC. AiPi quietly funded more than 100 patents suits across the country filed by entities including nondescript LLCs, an icebox company, and Lauri Valjakka of Finland who sued 11 tech companies including Netflix, Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.
