N.Y. Police Union Allowed Into Suits Involving Floyd Protests

The Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York Inc. has a right to intervene in suits stemming from the policing of 2020 protests in the city that were sparked by the murder of George Floyd and sought to change the police department’s procedures, the Second Circuit said Friday.

The plaintiffs in the four cases claimed that the police’s military tactics during the protests were excessive and violated both the U.S. and New York Constitutions. They requested that the defendants—the city, the police department, and individual officers—be enjoined from using those tactics to interrupt peaceful protests in the future. ...
