A lawyer can’t use a first name as the sole name of his or her firm, the New York state bar’s ethics committee advised in a May 17 opinion.
The opinion—which addressed a narrow question that no other bar panel or court has considered—highlights the breadth of New York’s uncommonly restrictive ethical prohibition on the use of trade names in law firm designations.
