N.J. Non-Lawyers Can Advocate for Families With Special Ed Needs

Non-lawyers in New Jersey can advise families of children with disabilities at meetings with school officials about their individualized education plans, a state committee said.

“The public interest favors permitting non-lawyer advocates who have knowledge or training with respect to children with disabilities and their educational needs to engage in this activity,” the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Committee on the Unauthorized Practice of Law said in an opinion Friday.

The opinion will make it easier for families who can’t afford lawyers to get advice on the best educational model for their children.
