Minneapolis police officers routinely rely on excessive and “unjustified deadly force,” discriminate based on race and disability, and violate citizens’ constitutional rights, the Justice Department said Friday.
A two-year pattern or practice investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department led DOJ to conclude “systemic problems in MPD made what happened to George Floyd possible,” DOJ said in a report.
Floyd, an unarmed Black man, was murdered by Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin in 2020, sparking mass protests and, nearly a year later, DOJ’s investigation.
