Michigan Justices Raise Minimum Wage, Order More Sick Leave (3)

The Michigan Supreme Court on Wednesday revived laws that increase the state’s minimum wage and expand mandatory paid sick leave—two policies that lawmakers had passed but later watered down.

The 4-3 ruling along party lines on the legislature’s “adopt and amend” maneuver—which the court said was unlawful—is expected to impact at least hundreds of thousands of workers when the measures go into effect come February. Michigan’s minimum wage is currently $10.33, and under the 2018 proposal the wage was supposed to gradually climb from $9.25 to $12 by 2022 and then be pegged to inflation.
