McDermott Builds Bankruptcy Group with Partner Pair in Chicago

Oct. 9, 2019, 4:53 PM

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom partner Felicia Gerber Perlman and King & Spalding partner Bradley Giordano have joined McDermott Will & Emery as partners in its restructuring and insolvency group.

Perlman will serve as the co-chair of the practice along with Timothy Walsh and Jeffrey Reisner.

“Both Brad and Felicia have played key roles in some of the largest and most complex restructuring deals in recent years,” Walsh, who joined the firm in 2012 from DLA Piper, said in a statement.

Their arrival in Chicago, along with the recent arrivals of Reisner from Irell & Manella—where he headed the bankruptcy practice—and Kristin Going from Drinker, Biddle & Reath, will bolster its insolvency group and demonstrates the firm’s commitment to growing the group in Chicago, Los Angeles and beyond, he added.

Perlman has represented clients in complex business reorganizations, debt restructurings and insolvency matters over her 20-year career at Skadden. She has worked with debtors, creditors, lenders and other parties in all stages of restructuring transactions, from Chapter 11 reorganizations to out-of-court negotiations.

In 2016, she played a lead role in representing oil and gas producer Atlas Resource Partners, L.P. in its prepackaged Chapter 11 reorganization in 2016 in the bankruptcy court in the Southern District of New York. She also represented biotechnology company Dendreon Corporation in its Chapter 11 reorganization in Delaware.

“McDermott has a strong transactional platform, along with a deep bench,” Perlman said in a statement. “I look forward to working with my new colleagues to build on the firm’s restructuring capabilities with an emphasis on complex company side engagements.”

Giordano joined King & Spalding in 2018 from Kirkland & Ellis where he was a partner.

He also represents debtors, lender groups, creditors, equity sponsors and strategic investors in both in-court and out-of-court restructurings. He also advises senior managers and boards of directors on operating in Chapter 11 filings and counsels credit and private equity fund clients on strategic acquisitions or dispositions of distressed assets.

“The strategic growth of the restructuring group, its collaborative culture along with the opportunity to work closely with Felicia, and the entire team, made the decision to join McDermott an easy one,” Giordano said in a statement.

The addition of the pair by McDermott comes amid a flurry of lateral moves in the bankruptcy and restructuring space.

Hogan Lovells added former Delaware Bankruptcy Court Judge Kevin Carey to its business and restructuring practice. Debevoise & Plimpton added the head of Jones Day’s New York structuring practice Sidney Levinson and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher picked up three of Jones Day’s restructuring lawyers, including Scott Greenberg the former co-head of its practice in New York.
