McCarthy Gets Jan. 6 Panel Subpoena Amid Tensions Over Riot (1)

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the US Capitol has taken the extraordinary step of subpoenaing House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy and four other Republican lawmakers.

The subpoenas for some of former President Donald Trump’s closest allies in Congress are certain to lead to extended court clashes, potentially rooted in the Constitution’s “Speech or Debate Clause” that shields lawmakers. The fight likely would extend beyond the panel’s planned public hearings next month and the release of its report later this year, past the point where the testimony would contribute to the record.
