Massachusetts Lawmakers Override Governor on SALT Cap Fix (1)

The Massachusetts Legislature turned down Gov. Charlie Baker’s effort to change its partial remedy for the cap on federal deductions for state and local tax payments.

The fix is included in the $48.1 billion fiscal year 2022 budget (H. 4002) the Democratic-led Legislature approved July 9. Baker (R) vetoed two of the budget provisions, including a charitable tax deduction, and proposed 25 amendments, including one about the SALT cap deduction.

Senate lawmakers voted Thursday on the governor’s vetoes and amendments, adopting few of the changes Baker wanted. The House had voted Wednesday.
