A native of India who became a naturalized U.S. citizen through misrepresentations and was stripped of his citizenship will avoid deportation under a controlled substances conviction from when he was a citizen, the Third Circuit ruled Tuesday.
Baljinder Singh, who falsely claimed his name was Davinder Singh when he entered the U.S. in 1991 and then later filed an asylum application under his true name, received lawful permanent resident status in 1998 and citizenship on July 28, 2006. To obtain that status, Singh lied about his prior immigration history, including under penalty of perjury.
