The MacArthur Justice Center has appointed a veteran civil rights lawyer as its new executive director after its previous leader became a federal judge.
David Shapiro, previously the executive director for the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights, replaces Amir Ali who’s now a judge on the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
The center litigates law enforcement misconduct, police shootings, and other civil rights violations across the country. It has in recent years pushed cases up and down the judicial system, including the US Supreme Court, where it’s had some success.
