A special legislative session to redraw Louisiana’s congressional map is on track to proceed this week after a federal appeals court said state Republicans hadn’t sufficiently explained why they needed more time to do that work.
The fate of the existing map is still in question. A merits panel will consider an appeal from legislative leaders and the secretary of state in early July, the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit said Sunday.
In the interim, the lower court’s order giving lawmakers until June 20 to add a second majority-Black district to Louisiana’s map may stand.
