Louisiana Social Media Age Gate Law Hit by Permanent Injunction

Louisiana is permanently enjoined from enforcing age verification and minor account restriction rules against Meta Platforms, YouTube, X, and other major social media companies, a federal court said.

Tech industry group NetChoice had sufficient standing to bring the case, and even if there’s a causal relationship between social media use and harms to minors, the state has failed to show that the law is sufficiently narrowly tailored to avoid needlessly burdening First Amendment rights, Judge John W. deGravelles ruled Monday.
