Louisiana Judge Had 40 Year Friendship With Lawyer in Port Case

A former federal magistrate judge who awarded over $120 million to a Louisiana company in a contract dispute had an undisclosed decades-long friendship with the party’s lead attorney, a Texas federal judge found.

Judge Michael Truncale of the Eastern District of Texas, overseeing the Louisiana federal court case as a visiting judge, found July 26 that since-retired Magistrate Judge Kathleen Kay had a “close, family friendship spanning nearly forty years” with the lead lawyer at trial for IFG Port Holdings, named William Monk.
