Lawyers for a New York jeweler suing BMW of North America LLC must pay a $5,000 penalty for making a frivolous damages claim, a U.S. judge ruled.

The sanction requested by BMW’s counsel was proper because that claim “had absolutely no chance of success under governing precedents,” Judge I. Leo Glasser of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York said Thursday.
