Lawyer Sanctioned for ‘Sarcastic’ Facebook Advice for Killing

A Tennessee lawyer was suspended over a Facebook post the state supreme court said offered advice to a distressed woman about how to kill her ex-boyfriend and what to say in her defense, comments the attorney said were sarcastic.

“Our rules do not permit lawyers to offer advice on how to commit crime with impunity,” the Tennessee Supreme Court said in handing down a one-year suspension Jan. 22.

Even though the Facebook comments were likely “the result of a foolish, impulsive decision,” this is not an excuse, the court said.
