Lawyer Reprimanded for Google AdWords Marketing Tactics

A South Carolina lawyer crossed the ethical line by running a Google AdWords campaign that used the names of opposing counsel as keywords for derogatory advertisements and didn’t indicate who was running the ads, the state supreme court decided Sept. 30 (In re Naert, 2015 BL 317697, S.C., 27574, 9/30/15).

By using these tactics, the per curiam opinion says, the lawyer broke the South Carolina lawyer’s oath as well as the ethics rule that requires lawyers to identify themselves in advertisements for their practice. The court publicly reprimand the lawyer as a sanction.
