Lawyer Can Contact Clients from Old Firm Without Ad Rule Breach

A New York estate planning lawyer can contact clients she had while at her former law firm to remind them she joined a new one without violating ethics rules on advertising, a state bar ethics opinion said.

The lawyer’s proposed communications are germane to her earlier representations of the former clients she seeks to contact, and “are therefore permissible, and are not governed by the rules governing advertising or solicitation,” the New York State Bar Association’s March 31 ethics opinion said.
