Law Against IMDb Posting Actors’ Ages Unconstitutional

A California law designed to limit age discrimination in the entertainment industry unconstitutionally restricts speech because it prevents websites like the Internet Movie Database from publishing the ages and birth dates of industry professionals, the Ninth Circuit said Friday.

IMDb operates a free website offering a database of entertainment industry information, as well as a paid subscription site used by job-seekers, casting agents and producers, the suit said. Profiles can be added and updated by anyone with an internet connection, and biographical entries frequently contain the subject’s age or date of birth, the state alleged.
