Labor Inspector General Initiates Review of BLS ‘Challenges’ (2)

The US Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General is initiating a review of “challenges” at the Bureau of Labor Statistics regarding collecting and reporting key economic data.

The review will focus on issues with collecting information for producer and consumer price indexes as well as “collecting and reporting, including revising, monthly employment data,” according to a letter dated Wednesday. The Labor Department oversees BLS.

The letter comes a day after the BLS published a preliminary revision to annual payrolls data, suggesting job growth in the year through March would be marked down by a record 911,000. That’s in ...
