Natasha Merle, who’s handled death row appeals and faced Republican criticism for her voting rights work, won confirmation to the federal trial court in Brooklyn.
The Senate voted 50-49 on Wednesday to send the civil rights lawyer to the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York, where she’ll be Joe Biden’s 100th district appointee.
Republicans opposing Merle were joined by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.). Manchin’s in a tough re-election fight in a conservative state and has recently opposed a handful of the president’s progressive judicial picks.
