Justices Won’t Disturb Virginia Covid Orders

Oct. 5, 2020, 1:42 PM UTC

The U.S. Supreme Court won’t review Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s stay-at-home order issued early in the coronavirus outbreak.

The court Oct. 5 denied an appeal by James Tolle questioning whether the quarantine restrictions were legal.

The court doesn’t typically agree to hear cases from petitioners representing themselves, but the justices asked the state to respond to Tolle’s petition, suggesting that at least one member was interested in the case.

The court has largely deferred to local, state, and government officials on measures imposed to fight the Covid outbreak.

The case is Tolle v. Northam, U.S., No. 19-1283.
