Justices to Hear Jurisdiction Challenge in Medical Consent Order

The Supreme Court will consider whether federal judges have jurisdiction to hear a Maryland woman’s challenge to a state court medical consent order while state proceedings over that order are still ongoing.

T.M., a 35-year-old woman with a rare gluten-triggered condition that can induce psychosis, was involuntarily hospitalized after an episode in 2023.

During her confinement, she and her father pursued several challenges to her treatment in state court. She ultimately agreed to a consent order imposing ongoing care and medication requirements to secure her release.
