Justices to Consider Credibility of Asylum Seekers

The Supreme Court will consider what immigration judges must do when turning away asylum seekers.

The justices agreed on Friday to take up challenges by the Justice Department to appeals court decisions reviving asylum efforts by two immigrants.

The issue centers on the REAL ID Act, which says testimony alone can qualify someone for asylum if it is “credible” and “persuasive.” The question for the court is whether an immigration judge must make a specific finding that a person isn’t credible in order to deny asylum.
