Supreme Court Rules Against Cruise Lines in Cuba Dispute (1)

The US Supreme Court sided against four cruise lines seeking to avoid hundreds of millions in damages for allegedly using property confiscated by the Cuban government.

In an 8-1 decision on Thursday, the court held that docking at piers built by the Havana Docks Corporation was enough to show use of their confiscated property under Title III of the Helms-Burton Act even though the company’s concession to operate them would have expired in 2004. The 1996 law allows claims against companies that knowingly traffic in property seized by the Castro regime.
