Justices Refuse to Consider Voter Deadline for Recall Petitions

The US Supreme Court refused to consider whether voters’ free speech rights are violated by state rules for recall election petitions.

In an order Monday, the court rejected Oregon’s appeal in a dispute sparked by a recall campaign during the pandemic that ultimately removed Oregon City Mayor Dan Holladay from office.

Despite their successful petition, a group of voters argued the state’s 90-day deadline to gather enough signatures for a recall election was so short that it violated the First Amendment’s free speech protections.
