The Supreme Court passed on considering the constitutionality of an Oregon law barring unannounced audio recordings following a challenge by the conservative activist group Project Veritas.
The case denied on Monday centers on a privacy statute that generally requires all parties to a conversation be informed that they are being recorded.
Project Veritas is a nonprofit known for its work surreptitiously recording journalists and others to reveal supposed liberal bias in institutions. It claims the law undermines the First Amendment’s newsgathering protections by prohibiting “today’s most powerful reporting tools—discreet audio recordings.”
