Justice Barrett Greeted by Hecklers at National Book Event (1)

Two protesters attempted to interrupt an appearance by US Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett at the National Book Festival in Washington.

Barrett, who was appointed to the court by President Donald Trump in 2020, is appearing Saturday at the event sponsored by the Library of Congress.

The first heckler was escorted out of the venue at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center after shouting inaudibly at Barrett.

The second was escorted out by uniform security after yelling, “Stop expanding federal power. Stop expanding the executive. John Jay would be ashamed.”

Barrett was greeted by applause from the mostly filled venue before taking questions on stage from David Rubenstein, co-founder and co-chairman of The Carlyle Group.

In response to a question about reaction to her opinions, Barrett said, “It’s my job to do what the law requires without respect to what reaction it may elicit from the outside. To do this job you have to be willing to be unpopular.”

Barrett’s memoir, “Listening to the Law: Reflections on the Court and Constitution,” is scheduled to be published Sept. 9. The Trump appointee will mark her fifth anniversary as a justice this fall.

Barrett, who replaced liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, reportedly signed a deal for $2 million for the book.

She began a book tour Thursday in New York, which will also include stops at the Nixon and Reagan presidential libraries, National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Notre Dame, where she graduated law school and later was a professor.

Asked whether she envisioned becoming a judge, Barrett said she hadn’t before adding, “In fact my husband and I have plots at Notre Dame in the cemetery there, so I really thought that’s where we were going to stay.”
