A Miami man was convicted Oct. 11 of first-degree murder in the 2014 slaying of Florida State University law professor Dan Markel, but the jury could not reach a unanimous decision on charges against the woman who prosecutors said arranged the killing.
A state court jury in Tallahassee found Sigfredo Garcia guilty after more than 11 hours of deliberations. Circuit Judge James Hankinson sent the panel back to continue weighing the fate of Katherine Magbanua, but they remained at an impasse and a mistrial was declared.
