A Michigan movie theater is suing the state for threatening criminal prosecution if it went forward with a planned Juneteenth film festival in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, arguing its constitutional rights were violated.

CH Royal Oak LLC, which is part of the Emagine Theatre chain, wanted to host a film festival in support of the nationwide protest over the police killing of George Floyd, and in celebration of Juneteenth, a holiday celebrating the emancipation of Black Americans, according to its complaint filed Tuesday in the Western District of Michigan.
