Candace Jackson-Akiwumi was confirmed by the Senate to the Chicago-based federal appeals court Thursday, adding another former federal defender to the appellate bench and diversity to the court.
Jackson-Akiwumi, a partner at Zuckerman Spaeder, was confirmed by the Democratic-controlled Senate in a 53-40 vote, securing support from a few Republicans. Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) all voted in support of her confirmation.
Jackson-Akiwumi, who is Black, will be the only person of color on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. The circuit covers Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.
