The IRS in the coming months plans to begin referring some high-income individuals who haven’t been filing their tax returns for criminal investigation.
Earlier this year, the agency sent special revenue officers to make in-person visits to taxpayers with incomes exceeding $100,000 who failed to file one or more of their returns. “Many of those taxpayers filed. They did the right thing and they became compliant, but many of them still today, have not,” said Darren Guillot, deputy commissioner for collection and operations support for the IRS’s Small Business and Self-Employed Division.
