IRS Reopens PTIN Registration for Tax Preparers, Restoring Order to Filing Season

The IRS Feb. 4 reopened its online preparer identification system, allowing preparers to once again apply for a number that will identify them with IRS when filing tax returns, and returning some normalcy to the 2013 tax filing season.

Tax preparers had been in limbo since Jan. 22, when Judge James Boasberg, in Loving v. IRS, issued a permanent injunction against IRS’s registered tax return preparer (RTRP) program, with IRS releasing little information about how tax preparers were to proceed in terms of getting or using PTINs.
