Two intellectually disabled brothers who were convicted of raping and murdering an 11-year-old girl in 1983 may pursue their civil rights suit against the law enforcement officers involved in the investigation, the Fourth Circuit said July 30.
A jury must decide whether the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and local detectives coerced confessions out of Henry McCollum and Leon Brown, the opinion by Judge Stephanie D. Thacker said.
McCollum was 19 and Brown was 15 when Sabrina Buie was murdered. Both had an IQ in the mid-50s.
