Hunter Biden Sued by Winston & Strawn for Unpaid Legal Bills

June 23, 2025, 8:27 PM UTC

Winston & Strawn sued Hunter Biden over what the law firm said were more than $50,000 in unpaid legal bills.

The bills were for the firm’s representation of Biden in a criminal trial in Delaware and other investigations by law enforcement, according to a lawsuit filed June 20 in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Biden was found guilty last year of three felony counts connected to the purchase of a firearm in 2018.

Former Winston & Strawn partner Abbe Lowell served as Biden’s primary lawyer at the firm. Lowell split from Winston & Strawn this year to form his own practice. He didn’t immediately return a request for comment on his former firm’s lawsuit. Biden could not immediately be reached for comment.

Lowell, in his engagement letter to Biden that was attached to the firm’s complaint, said he would charge $1,510 an hour for his services, while hourly rates for his colleagues would range from $795 to $1,945. The Winston & Strawn complaint said some of Biden’s bills were paid between March 2023 and October 2024 but “a substantial amount remains due and owing.”

Winston lawyers Matthew Saxon and Scott Ahmad filed the firm’s complaint against Biden. Saxon and Ahmad didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

Biden also pleaded guilty to tax evasion last year. Lowell and colleagues at Winston & Strawn also represented Biden in that matter, court records show.

The case is Winston & Strawn v. Robert Hunter Biden, D.C. Super. Ct., 2025-CAB-003962, 6/20/25
