Hulu Win Against Database Patent Affirmed by Federal Circuit

Hulu LLC‘s successful challenge to the validity of a database management patent at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board was affirmed by the Federal Circuit Thursday.

Sound View Innovations LLC’s U.S. Patent No. 6,125,371 covers systems for monitoring a database and optimizing its efficiency by reclaiming memory space that is no longer used. Hulu and Unified Patents LLC challenged parts of the patent at the PTAB, arguing the invention had already been disclosed in a textbook that outlined purging duplicate versions of data items from databases to save storage space.
