Hackers Accessed Images of Travelers, Plates, Government Says

A cyberattack has exposed photographs of travelers and images of license plates, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

A subcontractor transferred copies of images collected by CBP to its own company network “in violation of CBP policies and without CBP’s authorization or knowledge,” an agency representative said June 10 in an emailed statement. The agency said it learned of the data breach May 31.

“The subcontractor’s network was subsequently compromised by a malicious cyber-attack. No CBP systems were compromised,” the agency said in the statement.
