The US Supreme Court should deny an unemployment tax exemption claimed on religious grounds by a charitable organization, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Service Employees International Union and several other groups told the justices.
Catholic Charities Bureau Inc. is asking for an eligibility requirement so broad and lenient that it will discourage legislatures from implementing similar exemptions or to repeal them because too many taxpayers will take advantage of it, the ACLU said in an amicus brief filed along with the Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
