James Burnham rejoins Jones Day as a partner in the firm’s Washington office, following a clerkship for Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and service in the Trump-era White House and Justice Department.
Burnham returns to Jones Day’s Issues & Appeals Practice, where he was an associate from 2010-17.
“James is highly regarded in Washington for the legal and strategic advice he provided to the former Attorney General and for his skilled leadership of large teams of Justice Department lawyers in difficult and high-profile matters, qualities that we had an opportunity to see develop during his previous time working at Jones Day,” said Noel Francisco, partner-in-charge of the firm’s Washington office, who was U.S. solicitor general during the Trump administration.
The University of Chicago law graduate was a deputy assistant attorney general in the DOJ’s civil division overseeing federal programs and consumer protection, and was counselor to the attorney general. His White House duties included helping with the selection and confirmation of judicial nominees.
